Speaking in front of every general and admiral in the U.S. armed forces at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, earlier this week, President Donald Trump insidiously suggested U.S. troops should be deployed to cities within the country and view them as a "training ground."

This is chilling, even from Trump. The thought that U.S. soldiers should be deployed to enforce order on American soil, superseding the criminal justice system, is naked authoritarianism. There is no other interpretation.

Trump also spoke of an "enemy within" and an "invasion from within," which are authoritarian phrases. He initially seemed to be speaking about undocumented immigrants -- not that it makes his language less disturbing -- but later seemed to apply the rhetoric to citizens who are discontent. Tru
