The anti-corruption watchdog has defended commissioner Paul Brereton's links to the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force (IGADF), arguing he gave advice to the military justice watchdog on a "strictly informal" basis and did not receive compensation.

A series of reports published by the ABC has shed light on Commissioner Brereton's ties to the IGADF during his tenure leading the federal anti-corruption body, the most recent of which detailed documents showing his plans to provide advice to the military body until August 2026.

Mr Brereton took office in 2023 after leading a four-year investigation into alleged Australian war crimes in Afghanistan , with his report finding "credible" evidence that defence personnel had committed war crimes.
