WASHINGTON – Washington, along with 19 other states, has joined a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice over new rules set to block federal victim services funding for undocumented immigrants.
The DOJ policy is scheduled to take effect next October. It could result in grants and other legal aid being cut, impacting hundreds of survivors in Washington alone.
Attorney General Nick Brown expressed concern over the rule. He stated that it is unconstitutional and would require legal aid groups to act like immigration enforcement.
The lawsuit argues that the policy violates federal law and could silence victims of domestic violence and other crimes.
