Aussies travelling to the United States can expect longer lines at airports and closed museums due to the federal government shutdown, according to US political expert Simon Jackman.

The US government shutdown is ongoing after the Senate rejected short-term spending measures, which would have kept funds flowing until November 21.

Democrats have been leveraging the possibility of a shutdown in an attempt to negotiate an extension of healthcare benefits, but Republicans wouldn’t compromise.

This is the first government shutdown in six years, and the 15th since 1981. The last government shutdown took place between December 2018 and January 2019, during US President Donald Trump’s first term.
