Rescue teams in Indonesia are scrambling to locate people believed to be trapped under the rubble of a collapsed Islamic boarding school amid questions around how the incident happened.

The Al Khoziny school in Sidoarjo town in East Java province collapsed during afternoon prayers on Monday, killing at least six young students .

Sidoarjo town's regent told local reporters that the school's management had not obtained permits for a two-floor extension to the school.

The incident has raised questions about the structural safety of Indonesian buildings, and whether some are ticking time bombs.
