A flotilla carrying activists seeking to break Israel's blockade of Gaza was intercepted by the Israeli military near the besieged Palestinian territory.

The activists expected Israeli authorities to intercept them, as has happened in past flotilla attempts to reach Gaza.

The activists are expected to be detained and then taken to Ashdod, where they will be told to sign deportation orders and flown out of the country.

The fleet consists of 50 small vessels with around 500 activists from dozens of countries and is attempting to deliver a symbolic amount of humanitarian aid — mainly food and medicine — to Palestinians in Gaza.
