A sex pest who killed six backpackers in a hostel fire has been thrown behind bars for lying to a court and falsely claiming his wife died in a car accident.

Gregory Allan Brown, 63, was convicted of manslaughter and served almost two decades in jail over the deaths at Sydney's Downunder Hostel in 1989.
He was convicted in Tasmania in 2022 of producing child exploitation material and sentenced to 12 months' jail wholly suspended.
Brown lied during the sentencing process with the intention of getting a more lenient sentence, Supreme Court Justice Helen Wood said on Thursday.
