An area of interest in Balgownie has been identified in a renewed search for missing toddler Cheryl Grimmer.

A search led by Cheryl's brother Ricki Nash involving volunteer organisation Search Dogs Sydney, was conducted this week in the Illawarra.

The search, involving dogs trained in detecting archaeological human remains, identified an area of interest that has been passed on to NSW Police.

"This is the first search in 55 years that has been undertaken in that area," Chris D'Arcy, president and co-founder of Search D
