On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Kiwanis Club of Monroe held its 26th annual Firefighter of the Year Award ceremony.
"It's just kind of our way of thanking them for everything they do," said Bob Desloover, a member of the club who helps organize the ceremony.
With Judge Joe Costello serving as master of ceremonies, two firefighters were named as Firefighter of the Year: David Kail, of the Monroe Fire Department, and the late Corey Bomia, of the Erie Township Volunteer Fire Department. Each winner received a trophy, as well as the chance to give $250 to a charity of their choice.
Bomia died in November 2024, after a three-year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. However, he continued to serve even after his diagnosis, overall serving as a firefighter for more than 40 years.
