Perhaps this has happened to you: You notice some little flies hanging out in the kitchen, maybe near a bunch of ripe bananas or possibly your compost bin. No problem, you've dealt with fruit flies before. So you set out a homemade trap.

But while it traps some flies, maybe even a lot, the problem doesn't go away. In fact, it just keeps getting worse. Maybe you look a little closer, and notice the flies actually look different, too. Where are their little red eyes? And why are they hanging around the onions, and not just the bananas?

It's possible you have scuttle flies, which act a lot like fruit flies but can be a lot harder to get rid of
