NEW YORK — Red Sox reliever Garrett Whitlock threw a season-high 47 pitches in Boston’s 4-3 loss to the Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

He hadn’t thrown more than 24 pitches in any outing since June 23.

Yankees’ Austin Wells connected on Whitlock’s 39th pitch, a changeup at the bottom of the zone, and delivered a go-ahead hit down the right field line in the eighth inning.

“We are all in,” manager Alex Cora said. “He is one of our best pitchers.”

Whitlock pitched a scoreless seventh inning with the game tied 3-3. He then retired the first two batters of the eighth before walking Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Chisholm took off for second on Whitlock’s 3-2 pitch with two outs, allowing him to score all the way from first base on Wells’ single. Right fielder Nate Eaton
