WORCESTER, Mass. —

The Worcester City Council on Tuesday passed a resolution barring its police department from entering a federal program that lets officers work with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and hold detainees in local jails.

Though the move is mostly symbolic, council members said it shows Worcester supports the immigrant community.

The resolution follows the arrest of Rosane Ferreira-De Oliveira , a Brazilian mother of three who was detained in May.

She is still in custody, but council members said she was granted asylum this week.
