CRANFORD, N.J. (WABC) - Authorities in New Jersey say a 17-year-old boy is facing murder charges after he allegedly hit and killed two best friends as they rode their e-bikes home.

Candles lit up a dark and quiet street in Cranford as hundreds gathered Tuesday night to remember two best friends, both 17, whose lives were cut short.

“I don’t think any of us had a decent night’s sleep because it could be our own. So, you put yourself in their shoes, and you come out and support,” resident Brandi Schmidt said.

Cranford Police say a 17-year-old driver struck the friends, who have not been identified, while they were riding their e-bikes home around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Both victims died later that night.

At Tuesday’s vigil, the victims’ mothers held each other up through their grief.
