AFTER endless cycles of infections, pain and fatigue, Abbie Elian finally discovered what had been going on in her body.

Horrifying photos reveal the culprit - a "gerbil-like" hairball attached to her contraceptive IUD.

Multiple UTIs , yeast infections, sharp pelvic cramps, and even kidney stones piled up before nurses suggested Abbie's symptoms may be being caused by her IUD, also known as the coil.

But the 29-year-old admits doctors were stunned to find it coated in what they called a hairball.

Abbie, from San Diego, California, USA , said: “When the doctor took it out, they called it a hairball. I did not touch it.

“We don’t think it’s just hair. We think it’s probably tampon fragments, maybe toilet paper fragments, my hair from my head."
