Celebrated Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento, 82, whose soaring voice has enchanted fans worldwide, has been diagnosed with dementia, his family said.
The Grammy-winning artist, a contemporary of other Brazilian icons such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Chico Buarque, experienced a “sudden worsening of his cognitive status” earlier this year, his son Augusto Nascimento said in an interview published Thursday by Piaui magazine.
After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, the most common form of the disease.
Nascimento is being taken care of at his home in Rio de Janeiro.
