PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — A woman is recovering after suffering severe injuries in a "vicious" dog attack in Palatka Wednesday night, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

PCSO said the attack happened on Beech Street.

According to brief statements made by the woman at the hospital, PCSO said, the woman stated she was walking down the street when the dog, believed to be a Pitbull mixed breed, appeared and attacked her.

A man working on a vehicle nearby heard the woman screaming, grabbed a sledgehammer and hit the dog on its head to make it let go of the woman, according to PCSO.

Afterward, PCSO said the man tried to make a tourniquet from a t-shirt to slow bleeding on the woman's arm, and then helped the woman in his car and drove her to the hospital.
