North Carolina's governor is calling on the federal government to maintain the aid for recovery efforts in the western part of the state amid the government shutdown.

On Wednesday, Governor Josh Stein said on X that he was relieved to hear that FEMA operations will not be affected by the shut down of the federal government.

Governor Stein called on the Trump administration to grant an exception for all recovery-related efforts in western North Carolina after it was hit by Hurricane Helene just over a year ago.

"We cannot afford for dysfunction in Washington to disrupt this critical work," Governor said in the post.

The shutdown began at 12:00am EDT on Thursday, October 1, after congress failed to reach a deal on a government spending bill.
