The Federal Trade Commission recently secured an historic order against Amazon , alleging that the company enrolled millions of consumers in Prime subscriptions without their consent, and knowingly made it difficult for those consumers to cancel.
And while Amazon has denied any wrongdoing, the retail giant agreed to a record-setting $2.5 billion settlement last week, claiming in a statement that the payout “allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers.” In addition to paying $1 billion in fines, Amazon agreed to pay $1.5 billion to affected customers and to simplify its cancellation process.
