U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) suggested that Democrats need to develop “thicker skin” after President Donald Trump posted deepfake videos of Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) that have been widely condemned as racist.
Trump posted the AI-generated videos of Jeffries wearing a sombrero and a mustache shortly after the president met with Democratic leaders earlier this week about a possible deal to avoid a government shutdown. Jeffries labeled the video as “racist,” but Vice President JD Vance said Trump was just making a joke.
Gimenez also dismissed the memes during an interview with CNN’s John Berman on Thursday when he was asked how those videos help negotiations.
