SPOKANE, Wash. — Eastern Washington University men's basketball coach Dan Monson announced on Twitter that his father, Don, has died.

Don Monson was inducted into the University of Idaho Hall of Fame in 2007. He played basketball for the Vandals from 1952 to 1955 before coaching them from 1978 to 1983.

Don Monson was named the Kodak Division I National Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. Monson led the Vandals to their first NCAA tournament that year, going as far as the Sweet 16.

Before taking over as U of I's coach, Don Monson was an assistant at Michigan State, where he is credited with recruiting Earvin "Magic" Johnson.
