KINGSTON — Two weeks after VIA Rail announced cuts to morning train service to Kingston and then later cancelled the service changes , city council is to ask the Crown corporation to commit to improving service to communities between Toronto and Montreal.

A motion to. be considered by council Tuesday night calls on Via Rail to maintain existing service and enhance train travel in and out of the city through upgrades to the existing station and predictable, enhanced service.

In 2017, city council voted to support Via Rail’s proposal to build a multi-billion dollar high-frequency passenger rail line through Southern Ontario .

As part of that plan, Kingston was to be major hub for passenger rail through eastern Ontario.
