BC Ferries has incurred a combined total of $78,000 in penalties from the B.C. government due to cancelled sailings related to crew shortages in the past fiscal year.
Earlier this week, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit told CHEK that the $78,000 in penalties stems from cancellations on 10 minor sailing routes, recorded between April 1, 2024, when the fees took effect, and March 31, 2025, the end of the B.C. government’s fiscal year.
“In fiscal year 2024/2025, a total of $78,000 in penalties was applied for eligible cancellations. These all occurred on the following minor routes: Routes 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26,” states the ministry.
“The penalties do not apply to cancellations caused by weather or mechanical issues.”
Among those included is Route 12 (Brentwood –
