HHS has broken from the prior administration’s stance on artificial intelligence oversight, rejecting a private-sector vetting initiative known as the Coalition for Health AI, Politico reported. CHAI is backed by companies including Microsoft and health systems including Rochester Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health. Deputy HHS Secretary Jim O’Neill told the news outlet the department does not support the coalition and emphasized the group holds no regulatory authority.

“They don’t speak for us,” he told Politico, describing CHAI as a potential “cartel” that could pressure startups to join in order to compete.
