FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Wake County man won a huge jackpot Friday playing digital instant games on the North Carolina Education Lottery app.

"It was a life-changing event," said James Roy of Fuquay-Varina.

Roy was sitting at home, playing the Bison Bonanza game at 50 cents a spin when suddenly, he hit a $488,063 jackpot.

He immediately called out to his wife in the other room.

"I said, 'Honey, we won a lot of money,'" he recalled.

Roy had won the top-level "Epic jackpot" in the game, which features a progressive jackpot that can be won at any time. The odds of that win were 1 in 62 million.

"It just shows anybody can win on anything," Roy said.
