LONGMEADOW — It might be impossible for some to recall one night, 58 years ago — but Longmeadow’s William “Bim” Morey remembers every detail of disobeying his commanding officer and flying a Huey helicopter into combat, saving six American soldiers pinned down by enemy gunfire in Vietnam.

“We got a call that one of our units was getting attacked,” the 84-year-old retired Army captain recently told The Republican. “They were in a circle, defending themselves, shooting outward.”
