MADISON (WKOW) -- A public hearing was held Thursday at the State Capitol to hear from experts and the public about a bill that would require the use of a federal E-verify program.

The bill would require the state and contractors with contracts totaling $50,000 or more to use the E-verify program to confirm the employment eligibility of their employees.

E-verify checks identity and employment authorization.

"The E verify program is not just about enhancing immigration law, it's also about reducing identity theft and fraud in the workplace," said Rep. Jim Riowoarcyk (R-Hubertus). "When undocumented workers use stolen or falsified identities to gain employment, it can have serious consequences for legal residents."
