WINGHAM – J. A. Morton was one of Wingham’s leading citizens at the turn of the last century.
In the 56 years Morton resided in Wingham, his influence could be seen everywhere in the town’s early development. He served as mayor, school board trustee, Children’s Aid advocate, Methodist Church elder, Freemason, Oddfellow and Forrester in addition to his vocation as town lawyer and police magistrate.

However, his most valuable contribution to the area is the thousands of plant specimens he donated to Western University, which established the school’s herbarium in 1919.
