APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - 66 Wisconsin veterans boarded a flight out of Appleton International Airport Thursday morning for the trip to New York City to visit multiple memorial sites.

The retreat, called Freedom to Liberty, a mission of healing, is taking veterans to New York City to visit the 9/11 memorial, the Freedom Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

Army Chaplain Steven Bell is attending the trip as a mental health resource, and he said this could help provide veterans with closure.

"Trips like this help our veterans deal with some of the baggage," Bell said. "It's a good reminder that yeah, you've served, but it was so purposeful, and you're a part of a country that is grateful for your service."
