ASHEVILLE - Darren and Marissa Green watched from nearby train tracks as their building along Riverside Drive flooded during Tropical Storm Helene. Debris flowed into it, destroying walls and the business — Second Gear Outfitters — inside. It was hard to continue looking at it in the months that followed.
"I avoided this stretch of land," Marissa said of the time after the storm. Driving across the Jeff Bowen Bridge in both directions, it was a visible reminder of the storm's impact on the city. "I think for most Ashevillians, they'd be reminded.... At least now when they'll look, they'll see something," she continued.
