Clocks will move forward by one hour on Sunday, October 5, at 2am, in NSW, Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and South Australia, marking the return of Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Clocks move forward during the warmer months so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less, allowing for better use of natural daylight.

Tasmania was the first state to bring DST back in 1967 after its temporary use during World War I in 1916.

Tasmania's decision to re-introduce the measure was prompted by a severe drought in 1967 that decimated the state's hydroelectric power supply.

By 'borrowing' an hour from the morning and adding it to the evening, DST would lead to less electricity consumption as Tasmanians turned on their lights later, saving power and water from the hydroelectric dams.
