ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) - The lights on the Centennial Bridge will be turned off to help migrating birds this fall.

At its peak as the Quad Cities area along the Mississippi Flyway makes it a major corridor for migrating birds, officials from River Action said. The lights will remain off through Oct. 15.

The “Lights Out” program helps provide safe passage for millions of migrating birds in the area because birds usually begin to migrate 30 to 45 minutes after sunset, officials said. Many small birds, song birds, gulls, and shorebirds migrate at this time.

On Saturday, the Quad City Audubon Society has a guided walk scheduled at Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island.
