**Devin Cooley Named Flames' Backup Goalie as Team Waives Three Players** The Calgary Flames have finalized their goaltending lineup for the upcoming season. Devin Cooley will serve as the backup goalie behind starter Dustin Wolf. This decision follows the placement of Ivan Prosvetov on the NHL waiver wire, allowing him to be assigned to the AHL's Wranglers. Cooley, 28, has limited NHL experience, with only six career appearances. This season marks his first opportunity to start on opening night. "Now, the work really begins. You never take your foot off the gas," Cooley said after practice at the Saddledome. He expressed gratitude for the chance, stating, "It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m really grateful and I’m definitely not going to take it for granted. Every day that you can spend in this league and especially wearing the C and playing for the city of Calgary, it’s just an absolute honour and I’m really excited." In addition to the goaltending changes, the Flames also announced the demotion of forward Rory Kerins and defenseman Ilya Solovyov to the Wranglers, pending they clear waivers. This development is favorable for young players Matvei Gridin and Zayne Parekh, who are vying for spots on the opening roster. Cooley's pre-season performance has raised some concerns. He recorded a 4.08 goals-against average and an .846 save percentage in three exhibition games. However, the Flames appear to have confidence in his ability to support Wolf effectively. Prosvetov's pre-season stats were similarly unimpressive, with a 3.96 GAA and a .875 save percentage. Despite interest from other teams after he opted out of his KHL contract, Prosvetov's performance may hinder his chances on waivers. Cooley acknowledged his struggles during the pre-season, particularly in a recent game against the Vancouver Canucks, where he allowed three goals on seven shots. "It wasn’t my best. I can be sooo much better," he said. He emphasized that the mistakes he made were correctable, stating, "I know exactly how I need to play in every single situation and that gives me all the confidence in the world that I know if I can execute at a high level, which you have to in this league every single day, I think I can be a really great goalie in this league and a really good supportive partner for Wolfie." The Flames are also taking a calculated risk with Kerins, who has shown promise during the pre-season. He recorded a goal and three assists in six exhibition games, but the team has depth at center with players like Mikael Backlund and Nazem Kadri. Flames head coach Ryan Huska noted Kerins' progress, stating, "If there’s one guy that’s come the furthest, it’s probably him with our organization." As the Flames prepare for the season, they must finalize their roster by reducing the number of players in training camp from 24 to 23 by Monday. The outcome of the waiver process for Kerins and others will be revealed soon, adding an element of uncertainty to the team's final roster decisions.
