Tulsa police say a 16-year-old girl riding a bicycle was hit and killed by an SUV just after 5 a.m. on Thursday morning near East 36th Street North and Yale Avenue.

Special Traffic Investigators say the girl did not have protective gear, lights, or reflectors on the bicycle—items that could have made her more visible to drivers.

A passing driver told officers it appeared the bicyclist was swerving between lanes before the crash.

Police say they do not believe the SUV’s driver, headed eastbound to work, was speeding or under the influence. Both the driver and the passenger stayed at the scene and are cooperating with investigators.

Officers have since towed the SUV and will begin running calculations to better understand the vehicle’s speed and the mechanics of the crash. Investigators
