RIVERDALE, Md. — The Maryland state attorney general’s office has identified a Riverdale man who was shot to death by the Cheverly police chief on Tuesday.

Officials say 45-year-old Tesfa Leith was shot to death by Chief David Morris in the 6600 block of Greenland Street, where they were investigating a car they believed was linked to a stabbing in Cheverly.

According to police, they were at the scene in Riverdale when they saw Leith outside.

They say he was carrying two knives when they discovered him.

Police say Leith moved toward them, still armed, and refused to put the weapons down.

A Prince George’s County police officer who was on the scene tried to stop Leith with a taser, but it didn’t affect him.

Morris then fired his gun at least once.
