SAINT PAUL, Minn. — With a federal government shutdown underway, the Trump administration moved this week to terminate billions of dollars in climate-related grants to states led mostly by Democrats, including Minnesota, where one state agency accused the White House of staging a potentially "illegal effort."

White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, who had long warned Democrats of sweeping federal cuts if they did not agree to a budget deal, announced on Wednesday that "nearly $8 billion in Green New Scam funding to fuel the Left's climate agenda is being cancelled," before listing projects in 16 states either run by Democrats or that voted against President Trump in the 2024 election.
