Classes cancelled at Mohawk College as support staff picket

Mohawk College cancelled classes at its main campus Thursday as hundreds of striking support staff from several colleges picketed outside the Fennell Avenue West grounds.

Picketers — about 300 in total — blocked entrances to the Hamilton Mountain campus on Thursday morning, college spokesperson Sean Coffey said in an email.

“In the interest of safety, the college decided to suspend on-campus classes and activities at the Fennell campus only,” he said.

Most classes will move online and employees should work remotely, the college said. However, the Fennell campus is still open and anyone who is already there can stay, Coffey said.
