Millions of people are in default on their federal student loans and could have their wages garnished soon. The U.S. Department of Education resumed collections in May, and it could take up to 15% of your take-home pay.
At the time, they started reaching out to borrowers to help them understand how to get up to date with their payments. They said they would start wage garnishments over the summer.
The U.S. Department of Education said it would furlough most of its employees during the shutdown, but borrowers need to continue with their payments.
So what if you need help with your loan during the shutdown?
The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation may be able to help. The DFPI told NBC 7 Responds that one out of three federal student loan borrowers is delinquent.
