OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but state data shows many women in Nebraska are still missing critical breast cancer screenings.
According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, just 67.6% of women ages 40–74 are up to date on their mammograms.
That means more than 30% are skipping recommended screenings.
In Iowa, state cancer data shows nearly one in three breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a late stage, making treatment more difficult and survival rates lower.
Doctors at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha stress that while treatment is personalized for each patient, outcomes are significantly better when breast cancer is detected early.
