REMBERT, S.C. — A proposed 1,700-acre solar farm project is facing mounting opposition in northern Sumter County, drawing strong reactions from residents and local officials alike. Now, the issue is moving beyond county lines and into the hands of state regulators.

The White Palmetto Project, backed by Treaty Oak Clean Energy, was introduced during a Sumter County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meeting in May. The company sought permission to build a large-scale solar farm across farmland near Black River Road, Borden Road, Cimmaron Road, and Log Cabin Road — a region currently zoned for agricultural conservation.
