HAMPTON, Va. — Due to the government shutdown, nearly two-thirds of National Park Service employees are now furloughed. Every day the parks stay closed, millions of dollars in revenue are lost.
National landmarks Hampton Roads residents know well, such as Fort Monroe, Historic Jamestown, and Colonial National Park in Yorktown, are all feeling the impact.
The Commonwealth is home to 22 park sites managed by the National Park Service. With the government shutdown, some historic sites remain open to the public, but others are closed indefinitely.
The federal government shutdown is impacting operations at some parks in Hampton Roads.
In Hampton, the historic Fort Monroe area is now considered partially open.
A spokesperson with Fort Monroe says the grounds, visitor center, and the Fort's
