A Canadian hardware chain that once sold everything from horse feed to work boots is hoping to come back from the dead just months after it closed 90 stores and laid off 1,900 employees to cover financial losses.

Peavey Mart is betting there’s a market for its hardware stores with a “neighbourhood feel” in an industry that has seen other hardware chains, including Lowe’s Canada, close stores across Canada in the past decade or so.

Still, the revised Peavey Mart chain expects to be a shadow of its former self, with plans to open up to a dozen stores in Alberta and maybe others in Saskatchewan, according to disclosures on its website that shed no light on any immediate plans to return to eastern Canada.
