FORT HOOD, Texas — Although some of the signs leading to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas still say you are heading instead to Fort Cavazos, the soldiers of the III Armored Corps say there is no identity crisis in the ranks of the base's more than 35,000 active duty soldiers.
The base, one of the largest military installations in the country, is still considered the "The Great Place" and the III Armored Corps still calls itself "America's Hammer."
Created in 1942, Fort Hood now covers 342 square miles in Central Texas. They proudly boast that 48% of the entire U.S Army's combat power, its Bradley fighting vehicles, its Abrams battle tanks and more, comes from Fort Hood.
