CLEVELAND, Ohio – Why is it windy at Progressive Field?
Turns out the answer is not just because of Lake Erie.
Things settled a bit for Thursday’s game, but Wednesday the trio of flags in centerfield fluttered constantly. Players twisted at the last second to make a catch. Cleveland.com Guardians beat writer Paul Hoynes called it a “windy Wednesday.”
Bryan Schmidt, Case Western Reserve University assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, weighed in on the weather.
He’s in a unique position: He focuses on fluid mechanics – that is, liquid and gases.
Like he says, “air is a gas.”
“Being next to the lake definitely does increase the propensity for the wind,” Schmidt said. “This is why cities like Chicago are windy all the time. If you are close to a big body of water
