FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The very nice and helpful woman at the rental car counter took one look at my driver’s license on Thursday afternoon and quickly realized she could skip the winter driving spiel she gave to most of the out-of-state customers who came through Fairbanks International Airport.

“You’re from Minnesota, you know why there’s a plug on front of the car.”

I do know why a truck might have a three-prong plug dangling out the front, and I’m very thankful that I won’t be needing it this weekend while I’m here in Fairbanks, Alaska, to cover the Bulldogs men’s hockey team’s season-opening series against the Alaska Nanooks.

While snow fell on Fairbanks earlier this week, temperatures will remain in the mid-30s and 40s this weekend to keep the precipitation solely in liquid form.
