Many Australians will lose an hour of sleep on Sunday as daylight saving time takes effect in five states and territories.

The change, just past midnight on Sunday will see an hour disappear, but promises longer daylight hours for the average worker.

Since clocks are rolling forwards, Australians in each affected state will see an extra hour of sunlight in the afternoon.

Early mornings will be less light than during the colder months.

Changes to the body’s schedule, however, can affect mood and cognitive function, so experts warn daylight savers should take steps to smooth the transition.

When will daylight saving time start?

Daylight saving time is due to start on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Clocks will change at 2am and skip forward to 3am Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).
