The registration of FIRs by the Uttar Pradesh police against people who installed banners that read ‘I Love Mohammad’ during Barawafat processions has drawn criticism from within the BJP, with a party leader from Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Jahanzaib Sirwal, threatening to resign if the leadership “fails to take immediate corrective steps restoring the confidence of Muslims”.

Citing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ’s “unacceptable” remarks and UP police’s “vindictive attitude”, Sirwal said that the situation there goes against Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Aur Sabka Vishwas. “It betrays this ethos through baseless legal actions, heavy-handed crackdown and divisive threats,” he said.
