The Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives and left more than 100 injured, has now acquired a sharp political edge, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting the tragedy in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.

CM Stalin criticised Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s swift visit to Karur, contrasting it with what he called the Centre’s indifference during earlier crises such as disasters in Tamil Nadu.

“When Tamil Nadu was struck by three major disasters that affected thousands, the Union government neither visited nor provided any funds. But now, with elections approaching, they rush to Karur," he said.
