WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) believes the most likely end to the government shut down will come from individual Democrats breaking ranks.

Thune does not think negotiations with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), will be the solution. He needs just five more votes to pass the spending plan.

“I think there are more out there who are looking for an off ramp,” Thune said.

One of the Democrats largest demands, is an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire.

Thune said he’s willing to talk healthcare, but only after the government is funded.

“We do have senators who are interested in perhaps reforming the program in a way that makes it workable, not just for the people who benefit from it, but also for the American taxpayer.”
