Leila Atassi’s Sept. 29 column, “ DeWine’s betrayal will haunt Ohio ,” excoriates Gov. Mike DeWine for last year’s failed attempt by Democrats to rig the drawing of legislative districts through the Issue 1 amendment to Ohio’s constitution.

There are many Ohio politicians Ms. Atassi can accuse of partisan hackery, but Gov. DeWine isn’t one of them.

I’ve known Gov. DeWine since I worked for his 1994 campaign for U.S. Senate, and I haven’t always agreed with him. Like an umpire, Gov. DeWine calls the pitch as he sees it and has done so throughout his political career; consequently, he has drawn the ire of fellow Republicans who have disagreed with him.
