Decades before Ed Gein was revealed to be a gruesome killer in Wisconsin in the late 1950s, he was a shy boy devoted to his stern mother.

The isolated childhood of Gein is part of the story along with his shocking crimes in "Monster: The Ed Gein Story," which premieres on Oct. 3 on Netflix. It's the latest in the crime anthology series from creator Ryan Murphy, which has previously dramatized the lurid crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer and brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez .
